PHA Film

Compostable plastic that’s entirely biobased, derived from bacterial fermentation.
Also known as
Polyhydroxyalkanoate, Nodax®

What is PHA Film?

Unlike PLA, PHA does not contain any fossil fuel derivative, making it entirely renewable and easily home compostable within a few months. Since it's derived from plants with no fossil fuels or additives, it breaks down completely, without leaving behind harmful chemicals or microplastics.

Unfortunately, home composting is not yet common practice, and compostable plastics are not yet widely accepted in municipal curbside programs. Still, if PHA ends up in a landfill, it will break down in months instead of the centuries required for traditional plastic. Read the common FAQs on compostable plastic here.

Why choose it?

  • Compostable in home composting and industrial composting facilities, with certifications available

  • Derived entirely from renewable resources

  • Waterproof

  • Heat and UV resistant

  • Food safe

  • Degrades more quickly than PLA and traditional plastic, even if it ends up in a landfill.

  • Biocompatible, which means it’s not harmful to tissue and can be used in medical and wearable product applications.

Why not choose it?

  • Compostable plastics require adequate messaging and home access for best-case disposal (in this case, composting)

  • It cannot be recycled, but because it looks and feels like traditional plastic, it can end up recycled with plastic. This contaminates and slows down the recycling stream.
