Frequently asked questions

It depends on the formulation of the gel, and the temperature of your freezing environment. Some gels can be fully frozen in 24 hours, others take up to 72 hours. Slower freezing can be more energy efficient but takes up more space.

Unlike dry ice, or regular ice, most gel packs are designed to be reusable, so encourage your customer to reuse gel packs.

The best disposal method depends on the type of gel:

  1. If the gel is home compostable, the fully thawed bag can be cut open with scissors and poured onto the compost heap.
  2. Drain-safe gels can be poured in a kitchen drain with hot tap water.

Since gel types vary by supplier, we recommend working with your supplier to label the gel packs with the recommended instructions.
