Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

Tough, strong thermoplastic
Also known as
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

What is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene?

ABS is commonly used in a wide range of applications to make things like keyboards, electronic parts, pipes, or automotive parts. Perhaps most notably, it’s used to make LEGO blocks. It's a thermoplastic which means it melts when heated to a certain temperature. This makes it a viable option for injection molding.

ABS is easy to mold because of its low melting temperature. The temperature at which ABS is molded dictates some of its qualities. When melted at lower temperatures, ABS will have more strength and higher impact resistance. When melted at higher temperatures, it has higher resistance to heat and it is glossier.

Why choose it?

  • Tough
  • Good resistance to impact
  • Good resistance to scratching
  • Hard to break
  • Low melting point
  • Does not conduct electricity
  • Good resistance to extreme temperature
  • Food safe

Why not choose it?

  • Low resistance to chemicals
  • Bad smell when heated
  • Fumes are toxic
  • Resin code #7, not likely to be recycled
  • Derived from fossil fuels
